Exploring the Bastakiya with Alfie...

If you've been following my blog for a while then you'll know that I've been photographing Alfie ever since he was a newborn, this makes his sessions and his family extra special to me. It also means, having a great relationship with James, Kelly and Alfie, that I can try out new shoot locations without the worry of not getting 'the {expected} shot'.

So this time, to my absolute delight, Kelly suggested the bastakiya. The bastakiya is an area of dubai on the bur dubai side of dubai creek, originally established by pearl divers towards the end of the 19th century. Now restored, cafes, art galleries and boutique hotels are hidden in its maze of narrow alleyways or Sikka's in arabic.

We explored the bastakiya, the winding lanes lined with traditional houses and wind towers, cobbled streets with blossoming pot plants and trees and beautiful, elaborate doors around every corner, a photographers dream!

Eventually when we could explore no more we stopped in the hidden courtyard of the XVA gallery for a refreshing mint lemonade. Nestled somewhere in the bastakiya (don't ask me for directions) this stunning courtyard cafe with its huge Narra tree in the centre provided a much needed break from the rising temperatures outside.

I absolutely loved this session, I was able to capture, for James and Kelly, their little boy exploring the country that he was born in and the culture that he's growing up in and those memories are are irreplaceable - I hope you love our journey around the bastakiya as much as we did!

If you have a great idea for your family photo session please do get in touch, I love anything a bit unusual and off the beaten track ;) xox
